چکیده

A mechanism of predictions for language implies that the parser has to build up potential upcoming continuations and then evaluate them given the evidence. We show that the difficulty produced by the mismatch between the actual continuation and the predictions is modulated by cognitive control as measured by a modification of the Stroop task. We ran a self-paced reading task in German using a paradigm similar to the one from DeLong et al. (2005) and Van Berkum et al (2005). Our results show a larger slowdown for readers with less cognitive control while reading surprising content. The results suggest that cognitive control modulates the ability to suppress irrelevant predictions.

Why Do Readers Answer Questions Incorrectly After Reading Garden-path Sentences?

Readers misinterpret garden-path sentences such as While the man hunted the deer that was brown and graceful ran into the woods as meaning The man hunted the deer that was brown and graceful and the deer ran into the woods. The “Goodenough” processing account proposes that misinterpretation occurs when readers are satisfied with the interpretation derived from the first-pass parse, and thus do ...

Logical Metonymy Resolution in a Words-as-Cues Framework: Evidence From Self-Paced Reading and Probe Recognition

Logical metonymy resolution (begin a book → begin reading a book or begin writing a book) has traditionally been explained either through complex lexical entries (qualia structures) or through the integration of the implicit event via post-lexical access to world knowledge. We propose that recent work within the words-as-cues paradigm can provide a more dynamic model of logical metonymy, accoun...
